Discover Fujairah: The UAE’s Hidden Gem

Fujairah Fort

Fujairah Fort, constructed between 1500 and 1550, stands as the oldest and largest fort in the United Arab Emirates. Perched atop a 20-meter-high rocky hill, it served as a strategic defense structure for the ruling Al Sharqi dynasty, safeguarding the region against maritime invasions and protecting essential trade routes. The fort’s architecture comprises three circular towers, one rectangular tower, an inner courtyard, and multiple rooms within its walls. Built using local materials like rock, gravel, and mortar, the structure reflects traditional construction methods of the time. In 1925, the British Navy shelled the fort, destroying three of its towers. Restoration efforts between 1997 and 2000 have since preserved its historical integrity. Today, visitors can explore the fort and enjoy panoramic views of Fujairah city, gaining insights into the emirate’s rich cultural heritage.
